Primary School - Key Stage 1 and 2
I like Southlands because I learn new things every day. We sometimes go outside for lessons and we can even use iPads. The teachers are very helpful and for me it is the best school in the whole wide world!

KEY STAGE 1
Year 1 - 5 years old
Year 2 - 6 years old
Key Stage 1 comprises Years 1 and 2. The Southlands curriculum framework is based on the National Curriculum for England. Teachers review the curriculum at the end of each term to ensure that it is fresh, relevant and appropriately resourced.
Lessons are conducted in a purposeful, working atmosphere. They provide good opportunities for the pupils to increase their knowledge and understanding, practise new skills and work both collaboratively and independently. Learning in the classroom is supported by termly trips outside the school grounds.
Although the curriculum becomes more formal in Key Stage 1, structured play is still seen as an important aspect of the children’s development. Attractive classroom displays provide information to help learning and celebrate pupils’ achievements.
All classes in Key Stage 1 benefit from the support of qualified and caring teaching assistants.
KEY STAGE 2
Years 3 to 6
Ages 7 to 10 years old
Key Stage 2 is comprised of Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Children are given the opportunity to explain their ideas and be involved in activities. Pupils are guided in such a way that they are able to fully reach their academic potential within a supportive environment. The school aims to develop pupils’ self-esteem and self-confidence. Weekly assemblies are held to develop the positive ethos within the school and to celebrate the pupils’ achievements.
Creativity and practical skills are encouraged through Drama, Music and a variety of Art and Craft work. From Year 5, upwards children are taught French, Italian, Music and Physical Education by specialist staff.
At the end of Year 6, the children take the end of Key Stage 2 national tests (through GL Assessment) in English and Mathematics, which are marked externally. Our test results are excellent, comparing very favourably to UK national results and are on par with the best independent schools. Italian children can prepare for their Italian Primary School exams (Quinta Elementare), if required.
