Southlands students travelled to Florence to take part in a Maths competition organised by the Maths department at the International school of Florence.
The contest encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.
The competition has three rounds; multiple choice, cross numbers and a group round, and ended with scavenger hunt. Team Southlands, made up of Riccardo and Yousif from Year 12 and Daniele and Ummul from Year 10, participated against 12 other teams from different schools in Italy.
It was the first time that we participated in a math competition in person and it went extremely well. We met many people with the same interest for maths and we got to walk around Florence, which was all very fun and overall an amazing experience.
- Riccardo, Y12
Our team played fantastically and eventually achieved an impressive third place in the competition. Daniele and Riccardo also won the mathematical scavenger hunt in a mixed team with four students from other schools.
