A highlight of the year is the annual Barbecue which takes place in June. Up to one thousand parents, family, friends, children and staff attend. It is a time that many alumni return and reminisce about their years at Southlands. Primary students can take part in the "Southlands Has Talent” event where every performer leaves with a medal and enjoys motivational comments from the judges (teachers).
The 6th Annual Globeducate Academic Olympiad was held online this year due to travel restrictions, but still welcomed teams from 25 schools across seven countries. Teams participate in a number of challenge across two days in English, Maths, Science and Sustainability.
WWF-UK Education Manager Matt Larsen-Daw gave the welcome speech at the Opening Ceremony, launching this year's eco and sustainability issues focused event.
‘I am incredibly grateful for having had the opportunity to compete in the Academic Olympics this year. It was a unique experience which I would recommend attending to anyone who has the chance. In normal circumstances you would get to travel and have academic experiences outside school grounds, but these online activities were well organised as well as professional. In these two days we challenged ourselves to deliver our best. I believe nothing will stop us from becoming even better, from reflecting on our mistakes in the event and highlighting our qualities for new challenges.’ Letizia, Year 9
