About our Principal Mr Deryck M Wilson

During his tenure at Southlands, Mr Wilson has seen Southlands grow from mainly a Primary School into an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Diploma Programme.

Mr Wilson gained his teaching qualification under the auspices of the University of Durham and following fifteen years as a classroom practitioner, gained his first headship in 1989. He has also worked in international schools in the Middle East (United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia) and was a Head teacher for Shell (Education) for five years in Nigeria.

Prior to taking up the position of Principal at Southlands, Mr Wilson was Head of a independent school in England. During this period the Early Years department of that school was judged “outstanding in every area” by Ofsted. The school also grew from a Primary School to one offering GCSE.

Mr Wilson has been chairman of the Rome International Schools Association on two occasions, is a recognised IB administrator and, after eight years of lessons, was awarded an A* in GCSE Italian! Mr Wilson is married to Mary, also a teacher, and they have two sons, James and Nathaniel, who have both completed university courses while he has been at Southlands.

On a personal note, Mr Wilson enjoys strumming the guitar, is an avid supporter of Newcastle United and tries to complete the Daily Telegraph cryptic crossword on a regular basis.
